The Honda CBR1000RR R Fireblade SP is the up-specification version of Honda’s flagship supersports machine, taking the standard Fireblade’s race-bred foundation and adding an even sharper set of components for genuinely track-focused performance. It sits below the ultra-limited Carbon edition in the range but shares much of its specification, making it the realistic choice for riders chasing the full factory experience without hunting down one of only 12 examples.
It shares the base bike’s 999.9cc water-cooled inline-four, producing the same huge 160kW at 14,000rpm and 113Nm of torque at 12,000rpm through a six-speed gearbox, with Two Motor Throttle By Wire delivering the same pinpoint precision at every point in the rev range. Where the SP pulls ahead is in the details, most notably a quickshifter for clutchless upshifts and downshifts, letting riders keep both hands committed to the bars and full attention on the apex rather than the gear lever.
Ohlins NPX and TTX36 electronic semi-active suspension, adjusting compression and rebound damping automatically to suit the surface and riding style, is matched to Brembo Stylema R radial calipers gripping a 330mm dual front disc, with a 220mm disc and Brembo two-piston caliper at the rear. Fitted with a 120/70ZR17 front and 200/55ZR17 rear tyre, and weighing 201kg with a 1,455mm wheelbase and an 830mm seat height, the same weight savings and rebalanced chassis that sharpen the standard Fireblade’s handling carry over in full. The same close-coupled, rear-set riding position as the standard bike keeps the rider tucked in tight, and the extra suspension sophistication is most noticeable when trail braking hard into a corner.
A premium finish throughout, from its bodywork to its switchgear, lifts the SP clearly above the base machine, marking it out as Honda’s factory-spec statement rather than merely an accessorised version of the standard bike, with SP-specific badging and colour treatment that mark it out on the road or in the paddock. It suits experienced riders and track day regulars chasing the ultimate Fireblade experience without the extreme exclusivity, and cost, of the Carbon edition.
