The Ducati DESMO250 MX is a full blooded 250cc motocross machine, the entry point into Ducati’s factory off road range and built for nothing but competitive racing. Sitting below the 450, it gives less experienced or lighter racers a genuine works spec platform without the outright power of its bigger sibling, still wearing the desmodromic engineering that defines every Ducati off road model.
At its core is a 249.7cc single cylinder four stroke with desmodromic four valve timing, its 81mm by 48.4mm bore and stroke and 14.5:1 compression ratio tuned for an explosive, free revving top end that produces 44.5hp at 12,500rpm and 28.3Nm of torque at 8,800rpm. Fuelling comes from a Keihin injector through a 44mm Mikuni throttle body. A close ratio five speed gearbox holds the engine in its powerband, and quick shift for clutchless upchanges keeps drive uninterrupted out on the track, with a multiplate clutch under hydraulic control managing the abuse of race starts. Selectable Riding Modes, Ducati Traction Control and Engine Brake Control let racers tailor the delivery to hard pack, sand or deep loam, while fall detection adds a layer of reassurance mid moto.
The chassis follows pure works bike thinking, an aluminium frame combining welded, cast, forged and extruded sections for the rigidity balance that lets the bike change direction instantly and stay planted through braking bumps. A fully adjustable 49mm Showa upside down fork with kashima coated tubes sharpens front end feel over rough ground, matched to a fully adjustable Showa mono shock at the rear. Galfer discs front and rear, gripped by Brembo callipers, bring the bike down from speed with control, running on Pirelli Scorpion rubber front and rear, with a DID chain and sprocket final drive sending power to the ground. At a claimed 103kg with a 970mm seat height, 1,499mm wheelbase and 7.2 litre tank, it stays light and easy to shift beneath a committed rider.
Every part of the package, from the slim bodywork to the responsive handling, is built to translate rider input straight into forward drive. This is not a road or trail bike, it is a competition motorcycle intended for closed course use, suited to the 250cc class racer chasing holeshots and lap times rather than commuting miles.
