The Honda CB650R brings pure four-cylinder character to Honda’s naked Neo Sports Cafe family, styled with a sharp, CB1000R-inspired edge that sets it apart from the twin-cylinder Hornet models either side of it in the range. It occupies a rare niche among middleweight nakeds, most rivals having long since switched to twins, and that four-cylinder engine is exactly what draws many riders to it, offering an alternative engine character entirely from its parallel-twin stablemates.
Its 649cc liquid-cooled DOHC 16-valve inline-four, with a 67 x 46mm bore and stroke and 11.6:1 compression, produces 70kW at 12,000rpm and 63Nm of torque at 9,500rpm through a six-speed gearbox. Honda’s E-Clutch system is available for clutch-free, fully manual style shifting, letting riders keep changing gear themselves without ever touching a lever, and the free-revving four-cylinder note gives a genuinely thrilling top-end rush that works equally well from city block to twisting backroad, with real character missing from many rival twins.
A steel diamond frame carries 41mm Showa SFF-BP upside-down forks and a monoshock with ten-stage preload adjustment on an aluminium cast swingarm, tuned to keep the chassis planted through faster direction changes. A 310mm double disc with a four-piston caliper up front and a 240mm rear disc provide the braking. With 150mm of ground clearance, a 1,450mm wheelbase, a weight of 205.8kg and an 810mm seat height, it stays composed and planted despite carrying more weight than the CB500 twins either side of it in the range. The riding position leans slightly forward over the tank, giving a purposeful stance without tipping into full sports bike discomfort on longer rides.
A trapezoidal-styled tail, aluminium bezel headlight and distinctive LED signature give it real road presence at any set of traffic lights, while a five-inch TFT screen with optical bonding stays clear and glare-free in bright sunlight. A 15.4 litre tank keeps refuelling stops to a minimum on longer rides. The CB650R suits riders wanting four-cylinder thrills and premium detailing in a compact, everyday naked.
