The Honda CRF300L is a lightweight, road-legal trail bike built to be equally at home slicing through weekday traffic and picking a line up a green lane at the weekend. Where the rally-styled CRF300 Rally adds fairing, fuel capacity and touring range, the CRF300L stays close to its dirt bike roots, staying slim, light and agile above all else, closer in spirit to a pure trail bike than a mini adventure tourer, at home equally on a muddy bridleway or a wet roundabout.
It shares the same 286cc liquid-cooled DOHC single as its rally-styled sibling, producing a spirited 20.1kW at 8,500rpm and 26.6Nm of torque at 6,500rpm through a six-speed gearbox that makes the most of a genuinely peppy throttle response. That performance feels particularly lively given the CRF300L’s kerb weight of just 142kg, making it easy to loft over kerbs and obstacles or simply flick between lanes in slow-moving traffic, and a 1,455mm wheelbase keeps the whole package feeling compact and manoeuvrable both on the trail and in a car park.
A 43mm inverted telescopic fork and a Pro-Link rear shock, using bearings rather than bushings for smoother, more consistent action, deliver 260mm of rear wheel travel and genuinely supple damping over broken surfaces, giving sure-footed control on loose ground and tarmac alike. A 256mm front disc with a twin-piston caliper and a 220mm rear disc, running on 80/100-21 and 120/80-18 tyres shared with the CRF300 Rally, provide confident stopping, while an 880mm seat height and slim bodywork keep the reach to the ground manageable for most riders, and a slim overall width helps no end when filtering through queued traffic.
A sharp LED headlight and indicators, along with updated graphics, bring the styling fully up to date without disguising the CRF300L’s trail bike character, and a 7.8 litre tank keeps the bike light rather than chasing outright range.
