The Honda MSX125, globally recognised as the Grom, squeezes genuine full sized motorcycle handling into one of the smallest packages on sale. Since its launch it has built a devoted following among riders who want something playful and characterful rather than another anonymous commuter, and it remains just as much fun parked outside a coffee stop as it is threading through traffic on the school run.
A fuel injected, air cooled 124cc single cylinder engine, with a 50mm by 63.1mm bore and stroke and a 10.0 to 1 compression ratio, sits at its heart, producing 7.2kW at 7,250rpm and 10.5Nm of torque at 5,500rpm through a slick five speed gearbox. It is a genuinely lively unit for its size, encouraging riders to work the gearbox and chase the redline rather than short shift, and that willingness to rev is a huge part of the Grom’s appeal to newer and experienced riders alike. Its cult status has only grown as an entire scene of owners customise and race their Groms, cementing its reputation well beyond the daily commute.
Chassis specification punches well above its size, with upside down 31mm forks at the front, a genuine surprise on a bike this compact, and a monoshock rear end running through a sturdy steel square pipe swingarm. Braking is equally serious, with a 220mm front disc and dual piston caliper backed by IMU controlled ABS, and a 190mm rear disc with a single piston caliper. Fat 120/70-12 and 130/70-12 tyres give the Grom its distinctive, chunky stance and genuinely confident grip when leant over. At 103kg, with a 1,200mm wheelbase and a 761mm seat height, it stays light, flickable and endlessly easy to throw around on the way to work or at the weekend.
A distinctive LED headlight and an LCD dash with rev counter, gear position indicator and speedometer round out a genuinely premium specification, and a 6 litre tank keeps the fun going for longer between stops. It suits riders wanting a fun, affordable second bike, or an eye-catching, easy to handle first machine for getting around town.
