The Kawasaki Ninja 1100SX SE raises the sport touring range’s weather protection for riders tackling serious distance, adding genuine touring focus to the Ninja 1100SX’s supersport-derived performance. It’s built for those who want the elements kept firmly at bay whatever the forecast throws at a planned trip, the version for the rider whose idea of a good ride involves several hundred miles rather than an afternoon loop.
Its liquid-cooled 1099cc inline four, a 77 x 59mm bore and stroke, 11.8:1 compression, DOHC 16-valve unit, produces 136PS at 9,000rpm and 113Nm of torque at 7,600rpm through a six-speed gearbox and wet multi-disc clutch. Revised engine components, longer fifth and sixth gears and a lower rev limit combine to improve fuel economy without blunting performance, a useful trait for a bike built to rack up serious mileage between services and fuel stops alike. That is useful when the destination is genuinely a long way from home, and the engine never feels strained at a sustained motorway cruise.
A twin-tube aluminium frame with 24.0 degrees of rake and 98mm of trail carries a 41mm inverted fork offering 150mm of travel, adjustable for compression, rebound and preload, and a horizontal back-link shock with 141mm of travel and rebound and remote preload adjustment, at 235kg. Dual 300mm semi-floating discs with Brembo M4.32 monobloc four-piston calipers, an upgrade over the standard Ninja 1100SX’s brakes, and a 260mm rear disc handle braking, on a 120/70 front and 190/50 rear tyre over a 1,440mm wheelbase with 135mm of ground clearance. There is plenty of stopping power in reserve even fully loaded for a trip.
A full fairing is paired with a windshield offering four hand-adjustable positions, reaching up to a 1,225mm high setting, so riders can dial in wind protection without tools, and the 835mm seat keeps the rider comfortably in command over long days, with a 19 litre tank behind it. It’s suited to riders who cover serious distance and want the elements dealt with properly. It’s the version to choose when the next big ride already promises a full day in the saddle rather than a quick blast.
