The Yamaha R9 wraps a potent three-cylinder engine in full supersport bodywork, bringing genuine race-derived engineering to the middleweight class and slotting neatly beneath the flagship R1 models in Yamaha’s R-Series line-up. It is built for riders who want proper supersport performance without stepping all the way up to a litre bike, or the running costs and intensity that come with one, and it has quickly built a reputation as one of the most complete middleweight supersports money can buy.
Its 890cc liquid-cooled triple, with a 78mm by 62.1mm bore and stroke, DOHC, four valves per cylinder, an 11.5 to 1 compression ratio and fuel injection, produces 119PS (87.5kW) at 10,000rpm and 93Nm of torque at 7,000rpm through a six-speed gearbox, wet multiple-disc clutch and chain final drive, with TCI ignition keeping everything dependable. It delivers strong, characterful acceleration out of every corner along with the distinctive engine note that Yamaha’s three-cylinder engines are known for, pulling hard from surprisingly low in the rev range as well as at the top end.
An aluminium Deltabox frame carries fully redesigned 43mm KYB inverted front forks offering independent high-speed and low-speed adjustment on each leg, while the rear shock adjusts separately for preload and rebound damping through a link-type swingarm. Race-derived Brembo Stylema monoblock calipers, stainless steel mesh hoses and large 320mm front discs deliver consistent, fade-free stopping power lap after lap on 120/70 front and 180/55 rear tyres, and a 220mm single-piston rear disc completes the package. At 195kg, with a 1,420mm wheelbase, 140mm of ground clearance and an 831mm seat height, the R9 carries its performance in a genuinely manageable chassis that never feels like hard work, and it feels every bit as capable as its race-derived componentry suggests.
A 14-litre tank, with CO2 emissions of 116g/km, keeps range sensible for road use between track outings. It suits riders who want genuine supersport engineering and track-capable handling with real road usability alongside it, rather than a bike that only makes sense on circuit.
