The Yamaha Ténéré 700 Lowered Version takes Yamaha’s purist middleweight adventure platform and reworks the ergonomics for riders who want the same off-road pedigree with more confidence at a standstill. It is not a different motorcycle so much as a recalibrated one, aimed squarely at shorter riders or those returning to adventure biking who found the standard T7’s reach to the ground intimidating.
Underneath, the mechanical package is unchanged and every bit as capable. The 689cc CP2 parallel twin, liquid-cooled with DOHC and four valves per cylinder, produces the same 54kW, 73.4PS, at 9,000rpm and 68Nm of torque at 6,500rpm, delivered through a six-speed gearbox and wet multiple-disc clutch that pulls cleanly from low revs whether picking a line through rocks or holding a steady motorway cruise. Chain final drive keeps servicing straightforward wherever the ride takes you, and fuel consumption of 4.3 litres per 100 kilometres keeps range sensible between stops.
Yamaha has reduced the seat and suspension height rather than simply lowering the seat foam, which keeps the 27 degree rake and 1,595mm wheelbase balanced instead of just cramming the rider closer to the tarmac, and ground clearance drops to 225mm as a result, still generous for genuine trail use. The double cradle steel tube chassis, 43mm upside down fork and remote-adjustable rear shock all carry over from the standard bike, as do the twin 282mm front discs, 245mm rear disc and the 21 inch front, 18 inch rear wheel combination, shod in 90/90 and 150/70 dual purpose tyres, that make this a proper dual sport rather than a road bike in adventure styling. At 208kg it remains light enough to manhandle when things get technical.
None of the T7’s straightforward, uncluttered character has been diluted in the process, with a 16 litre tank still supporting real distance between fuel stops on longer days out. It suits riders who love everything the Ténéré 700 stands for but want a more manageable reach to the ground, whether tackling green lanes or covering serious mileage.
